Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
