At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in national works. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
